HEC-1 and dam analysis questions

Help! I have to use HEC-1 for a dam analysis, complete with dam break and sunny day evaluations. I have no idea how to incorporate downstream backwater effects into a dam analysis? can someone offer guidance or where I can find comprehensive instructions other than the HEC-1 manual?
