Steamline_Temperature2_ia1jqd.png

Hello,

Please take a look at the attached drawing.

I'm trying to calculate the temperature of the outer surface of 24" Sch. 60 CS Pipe (completely drained & vented), which is 1.5 meters away from 400 deg Celcius steam line blocked by a close-shut valve.

I'm thinking the temperature would be higher than the ambient temperature due to heat conduction from the hot steam line.

If the ambient temperature is 20 degrees Celcius, what would be the temperature of the pipe 1.5 meters away?

Please help!! Thank you for your answers in advance :)

Schoolwork is not allowed on this site, but lettuce assume this is a garden variety industrial problem. Odd seeing ANSI units (SCh 60 and 24 inch) with academic values (temperatures in deg C and lengths in meters.)

How much insulation is on the valve body, the first pipe and the second pipe?
Nominal wind speed, if outdoors. If indoors, just ambient natural circulation?

Sch 60 CS pipe? Weird thickness.

Is the pipe capped with a blind flange at 1.5 meters? if it is a blind flange, is the BF insulated? If not capped, what happens there?

Depends on the type of valve, but a rough estimate would be to give the valve an equivalent length of pipe and start from there...

Not enough data.

At 400C I can't see a valve, especially a manual valve, not being insulated for personnel protection, ditto the line.

So in time the valve will reach pretty close to 400C.

How much heat is transmitted along the line will depend on the heat transfer off thepipe to the surrounding air.

This is dependent on wind velocity, air temperature, surface of the pipe, thickness of the pipe insulation if any etc.

Could be anywhere from 50C to 300C
