I have a shell and tube heat exchanger with the following details:
Shell side design pressure 10 barg.
Shell fluid: MEG / water mix (cooling medium).
Tube Side Max Operating Pressure 80 barg.
Tube Fluid: Hydrocarbon gas.
Relief protection: Bursting disc sized for sudden tube rupture.
My query: What sizing criteria should I use to size the bursting disc when looking at the cooling medium flow initially displaced by the gas under a tube rupture scenario. The cooling medium will be rapidly displaced by the gas so cooling medium will only be relieved for a very short duration, therefore I don’t want to apply a conservative design criteria for this short duration rate.
No advice is required for line sizing based on the gas rate relieved. I’m only interested in the cooling medium transient relief case.
