Heat exchanger arrangement and duty

Dear Forumners,

I'm quite new when it comes to HE and I am learning to understand arrangement and duty mean on the data sheet. Basically in the data sheet I was referring to stated that the HE shall be 3 x 50% in parallel. What this mean actually?

Based on my understanding this refers to the HE are design in parallel where each unit working at 50% heat duty. Meaning all three units are working with 50% of its design duty isn't it?

Or 2 x 50% is working, while 1 x 50% is clean, ready-to-go, but in stand-by mode. Then a dirty/broken HE can be taken off-line and cleaned/repaired without affecting the entire unit.

To a ChE, the glass is always full - 1/2 air and 1/2 water.
 
You also see this in pump systems, 3 x 50% means that two are used for service and one is being fixed/cleaned/standby.
Sometimes facilities have a planed rotation, so the 'out of service' unit changes regularly.
Some plants always clean and test a unit when it is taken out of service, and then it is left clean and dry ready to be used when one of the others becomes too dirty or fails.
