Hello,
I have a problem with the headgates sealing the penstock to dewater for turbine maintenance. An old practice was to drop coal cinders in and they would expand and help seal the leaks around the headgates. We have tried bark mulch with limited success. Does anybody know any thing else that is environmentally friendly, ie any type of grain ?

Thanks for responses in advance

Hope this isn't too late. Oilfield drilling technology presents numerous materials/muds and additives which, when dispersed in the vicinity of a liquid leak, will effect a complete sealing of that leak. Try bentonite for instance, after wetting will expand to 11 times it's original volume. Additives include such simple materials as cellophane flakes, for effecting a quicker seal.

Spent a lifetime sealing off 'lost circulation' zones in deep, highpressure boreholes. Name it, I've tried it. Try any oilfield service company, ie. Halliburton, Schlumberger, BJ Hughes or call your local water well driller. He has the bailing wire horsesense to solve your problem.

Good luck,
Pacsur
