Hatch - "Gravel" pattern error

I have a large drawing of a building with a lot of detail. The drawing was drawn in milimeters. When I hatch a 6" area showing gravel under a slab, it is displayed as a bunch of straight lines all over the place. It doesn't look like the gravel hatch at all.

Is this some sort of error? Is there a way to correct this?
