Hi

I'm not familiar with glass industry. Is there a straightforward way of estimating glass cost?
Let's say current 2 ft X 3 ft X 3/16" thick glass costs me $10. Then, what would be the estimated cost of 1/4" thick glass if all the other edge/finish/qty etc conditions are identical.

I'm coming from sheet metal industry. If you know your average cost per lb, your estimation of another size and thickness calculation is reasonably accurate.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Glass cost is not cut & dry like sheet metal. A small fraction of the cost is the raw material, the majority is the manufacturing cost. Varying thicknesses of glass take different amounts of time in the oven to start. Variations in finishing such as tempering and edge treatment also contribute to a variable cost. If the glass will be a sealed unit, that factors in as do tempering/heat treatment, holes, pattern etching, lamination... the list goes on.

This is why there is no cost guide for glass. I've tried to contact manufacturers to get a feel for pricing, they have always declined to comment. Glass manufacturing orders are done in a bid process and the pricing scheme is very convoluted.
