giving parts colors

i want to give a part color but it is not letting me assigna color. the "EDIT COLOR" button is not active. is there some i need to do to make it work?
 
Select the body and RT click and go to body properties and from there you can "change color" I am on SW 08 and it is different on older versions.
 
Right Click on the top of the model tree , go to appearence.
