Trying to understand a clue given in contest. First clue was used to seperate liquid from solid. Second clue is, It is used by Geotechnical Engineers also. Can anyone help?

Gravity....

In the particle size analysis test for fine grained soils, (hydrometer test)the solid soil particles are separated from the liquid by gravity in a graduated cylinder.
