I am modelling a component which involves large areas of contact (a kind of press-fit) and very large deformations, including elastic springback. I have the problem that the time-steps are reduced to the point where there is really no use continuing the analysis (about the magnitude of 1e-18s). This occurs after contact has beeen established and the large deformations start to appear. I know that the time-step needs to be reduced, but when it goes this far I can't help but think there's something ill-conditioned about my model.

So my question is really; what do you first try to tweak in situations like these? I've played around with the contact settings (stiffness, tolerance, interaction distance, smoothing etc.), increased the duration of the analysis (it's an MES) to avoid vibrations and the mesh seems of reasonably good quality to me.

What are other things that I might try?

Thanks,
Björn
