I'v ebeen asked toconsider galvanising cold formed tubing for handrails. typically Hybox 355 42mm x 4mm . It will mean bending to a radius of approx 300.
I'm concerned about the possibility of cracking that may lead to premature corrosion of the rails. I belive the most vulnerable part will be the inside where the top horizontal goes to the end vertical section. This section won't be loaded. It's just that I'm aware of the fact that this will have increased residual stresse and be more vulnerable laible to cracking due to liquid cracking, etc etc, but these are very slim chances.
It's approx 2/3 the cost of hot rolled sections, and I'm wary that there's some other reason as to why we don't use this material. I don't have time to do tests.
I've checked with the bending specialists and they confirm that it's ok to bend it.
I know there's another product that Corus do , called Celcius structural hollow sections, and that that has benefit of hot rolled and cold formed tubes.
