Furnace Welding

Can anyone tell me what is meant by a furnace weld? It isn't a term that we come across very often in Australia. I'm asking in regards to welded steel boiler tubes, but I'd be interested to know what is involved in the process and common applications.

Never heard it. You fusion weld and furnace anneal.
Welded boiler tubes? must be for low temp application.

Furnace welded tubes are allowed in ASTM A53. I have an idea of what is involved, from googlilng, but the information I found wasn't very informative. I'll have another dig around.

You might also find info under "bell welding".
You end up with a "S" shaped joint full of oxides. The only interest in this could be as history.

I believe that furnace weld refers to continuous butt welded pipe. The skelp is heated in a furnace and the longitudinal seam forge welded. Good for fence post or low pressure service applications. Was extensively used in small diameter, low pressure gas distribution systems and residential plumbing until replaced with plastic pipe.
