I am still new to the concept of rear axles and would like to know how to identify a full floating vs a semi floating axle.I have read about them on wikipedia but am confused about the functionalities.
After a cursory search: If the bearing at the end of the axle tube locates onto the halfshaft it is a semi floating design, whereas if the wheel bearing transmits the static loads directly to the axle tube and the halfshaft only reacts torques it is a fully floating axle.
Basically if you can pull the halfshaft out and the wheels don't fall off it is a fully floating axle.

Not to mention the great fun in removing the axle shafts from a friend's full floating rear end and reinstalling the hub caps some late night. Not that I would know anything about that
