FS for sliding

I am working with an agency that has required 2.0 FS for sliding on a spillway training wall. USACE typically requires 1.5. Overturning FS is also 1.5 Any idea why it should be higher? Footing will be keyed into rock, so sliding is very unlikely anyway.

No idea, but if they want 2.0, that's what you will have to give them. Some agencies are just more conservative than others. Sorry.

That is correct; in this situation the sliding is very critical and may cause critical damage. A higher FS is usually used. If the RW keyed into rock, you shouldn’t have a problem getting the 2.0

Also remember that the required factor of safety should be tied to the loading condition. If the loading condition is very common a FS of 2.0 my be a good idea, however, if the loading condition is extream then a lower FS is called for. This is the approach that the COE has adopted and should be encourage for all agencies.

Main reason for saying all that is that the the agency's and COE's loading conditions may be different.
