This is probably a pretty basic question (I'm studying for my PE), but I can't seem to find an answer. The question asks to determine the SG when using mercury submersion, and to find the fractional mass loss of a pat of clay with LL=66, PL=40, SL=25 when the volume shrinks from 15 cm^3 to 9.57 cm^3.Some how they come up with 0.60-0.25=0.35 as the fractional mass loss (dry basis). I'm not sure where they get this last part.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks!
