forces on a pin in a pressurized chamber

Hi,

I have a confusion. The question is if a solid pin is inserted in a pressurized chamber(5000 psi) with both ends sealed, as shown in the attached picture then how much force is required to pull the pin back. will pressure have any effect on resisting the pulling force. kindly help

depends, the simple answer to match the simple sketch would be no.(till the retracting end enters the fluid boundary)

If a real situation, then the seal design and fluid may cause the pin retraction to be harder with pressure verses without

No, there is net force inrease from the pressurized chamber. The ends act equal and opposite the pressurized vessel since pressure acts in all directions over the seal ends with equal force.

The required force is simply twice that required to overcome drag of the sealed ends. Given the typical elastomer squeeze, then it is quite simply static coefficient times normal load imparted from your seal element, twice of.

One thing to note is that you may have a projectile situation as well as rapid decompression once one end of the pin clears the seal in one side of the vessel.

It is better to have enough ideas for some of them to be wrong, than to be always right by having no ideas at all.

When one end of the pin clears it's seal this thing simultaneously becomes both rocket and cannon.
