Flying magnet wheel

I understand that a mag pickup should be used with a toothed wheel or gear made of steel or iron. I have seen an add for a "flying magnet" wheel which is aluminum with embedded magnets, and it appears that a mag pickup is used. Is there a different type of mag pickup that would be used with a flying magnet, or am I confusing it with a Hall Effect sensor?

Toothed wheels require a magnet inside the sensor, other than that there need be no difference in the "flying magnet" wheel. Of course there are different resistance windings between manufacturers and applications. One easy way to tell if the sensor in question is inductive or hall effect is to count the wires, 2 for inductive and 3 or 4 for Hall effect.
