Flow direction for Orifice meter in vertical pipe 1

Why is it important that if I have liquid, the flow direction should be from bottom to top. and opposite in case of gas; when using orifice flowmeter in vertical run?

Liquid often has bubbles of gas in it; you want them to pass through only once. In a downward flowing stream, you have to fight the bubbles' buoyancy to make them go down, and there may not always be enough velocity to do that.

Similarly for gas streams; they may carry blobs of liquid or particles, and you want gravity to help send them on their way.

Another reason for upward flow in case of liquids, particularly for volumetric flow type meters, is to ensure full pipe flow. This will ensure that the pipe cross sectional area is constant always.
