Dear all,
I am a master student of structural engineering.I have to write a research concerning with floating column.So I want to read reference books.Which books should read for me?Please advice me.[ponder]

Well I admit I had to google what a floating column was, and after that I don't think you would find much in books about 'fake' columns that end before the floor. You might obviously find a bit more about the transfer structures involved in terminating a column from above like that. I suspect that is the real question being asked. The design of the floating part of the column hanging from above is fairly arbitrary after dealing with the transfer structure design that's implied.

 
Is a floating column one in which due to differential axial shortening, columns in the lower portions of high rise buildings end up taking next to no load?

It is a column that is supported by a transfer beam, so, yes, it transfers out, thus being discontinous to the foundation.
