I am having a little trouble determining what allowable tension values to use for an existing masonry shear wall subjected to in-plane lateral forces. The way I see it, is that for both in-plane and out-of-plane shear walls, the flexural stresses are normal to the bed joints. In a vertical bending application, such as a lintel, the flexural stresses would be parallel to the bed joints. I have attached a quick sketch of what I am thinking. Can anyone provide a little backup to my rational?

I agree, as well.
