Finding Top-Level Assembly

Dear all,

is there a convenient, automatic way, given a folder of models (parts and assemblies), to find out what the top level assembly is?

Is there a way to get the whole hierarchy, without opening the top level assembly in Pro/Engineer?

There is good news and there is bad news!


The Good news: Yes you can find the top level assembly and the hierarchy of an assembly.


The Bad news: You need to spend more money, as you will need to purchase one of PTC's database managers for placement of the files so you can run reports.

Intralink is a good choice for you. it will generate BOMand all you want automatic.

I used to always do searches for text strings in the assembly file headers for part names but at some point the MSWindoze search function quit functioning (thanks Mr. Bill). So I have been using FindMyMother which works pretty much the same way & continues to work. The interface is a little convoluted but it is a useful tool if you don't have a PDM system.

It won't give you the hierarchy though, just a list of all assemblies or drawings that use a given part.
