Fillet Weld size (Leg length)

Hello everyone,

I need to weld a 12mm plate to a 14mm thick pipe (42 inches) and the pressure is 700 KPa, it is going to be a tee-joint fillet weld but I need to know the leg length for that weld? The process is SMAW in case that helps.

The required weld size would normally be based on the load applied and the allowable stress of the weld. I assume the pipe standard would give limitations on minimum and maximum size of welds, type of welds, etc., that could be used. You can also check the stresses in the pipe wall.

Give us a free body diagram showing how the plate is to be welded ( longitudinally, circumferentially or to some transverse angle to the long axis of the pipe) and the forces imposed on the pipe and plate and the type of welding rods to be used.

Determine the load on the weld and then calculate the required fillet weld leg length. Otherwise use a full pen weld and then you don't have to calculate !!!

Assuming that this is a non-pressure (pipe support maybe) part welded to the pipe subject to pressure, then both JStephen and DSB123 provide the answers.
