which Filler metal is used to weld S31803 Duplex stainless steel to carbon steel, E/ER2209? or E/ER309Mo?

metengr, thanks.

If chloride exist in the service and temperature above 65C, I we use 309?

SJones,

In fact, only Duplex is used to resist chloride in my work.

I was thinking whether or not we can use 309, assuming the dissimilar welding of duplex and Carbon Steel.

Outokumpu suggest a E2209 electrode while IMOA a 309. I think that the E2209 will give you a higher corrosion resistance.

The problem could be also the duplex 22005 if the chloride are too high..at 65°C there is some risck of pitting or SCC
What kind of service is ? Oil&Gas?

Corrosion Prevention & Corrosion Control

You need to go with 309. The welds will not have corrosion resistance, you need to worry about the mechanical properties.

Mechanical strength is what you're after here. Your carbon steel part will be freely corroding in services where 31803 is properly specified, so this must be some kind of secondary attachment or spec break connection where the corrosion conditions are not severe.

If it's a connection to a structure outside the corrosion zone, consider the use of a "poison pad" between the CS and the 31803 so the base metallurgy remains intact.
