Hello,

Curious what metal might be recommended for service in ferric chloride anhydrous at 180F? Any water produces nasty HCL as a by-product, thus material to be kept very dry.

I was thinking Alloy 2205 may do well.

However, need the material available in 16" pipe.

Any ideas.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
MecoMan

it depends also on the concentration of the ferric chloride solution. it seems that the only alloys for high temp and conc are Titanium or high nickel alloys like Hastello C (C22 or C276) or you've to go for a plastic materials.

Why should solid Ferric Chloride powder (180F is well below its melting point) provided it is assured to water free be much of corrosion problem?

Ferric chloride is so hydroscopic that keeping it dry is nearly impossible. After all it is sold as a hydrate.
As long as the system is warm and dry there are a lot of materials that will work. Dow has published a number of papers on this subject.

Thanks for the feedback.

The plan is to keep it dry to avoid the HCL and increased corrosion.

Does anyone have experience with in a dry environment? If so, what metals performed the best?

Need to be able to fabric with 16" pipe and weld the materiial.

We are not familiar with the Dow report. Is it concerning plastics?

Dow makes magnesium, and in the process they handle almost every Mg compound that there is. They use both metals and plastics.

Actually, Dow left the magnesium business years ago. But, as a giant chemical company, they use large amounts of metals for their chemical production facilities.
