Hello
I am trying to model the bottom of a sailboat mast which consists of a carbon fibre mast tube sitting on a metal heelplug and it is subjected to a compression force.
my plan is to model the carbon fibre tube with 2D shell laminate elements and the metal heelplug with 3D solid elements
and the big question is how do i treat the tube/heelplug connection ?
I have Femap 10.1 so I can't do the "edge to surface" contact

thanks in advance for your help !

You could create a skin for your solid elements to take the rotational DOF.

create a plate property with the same material as your solid and with a thickness of ~0.1mm.
then Go to Mesh / Edge Members / Select your solid elements / select nodes to limit faces creation.

Correct, solid elements do not have the rotational degrees of freedom that the shell elements do. SO there will not be any moment transfer if you simply use the edge of the solid to connect with the shell. This is a very detailed article I found, hope it helps.

Stressing Stresslessly!

Hello!,
Please consider to use the NX NASTRAN condition EDGE-TO-SURFACE GLUE contact, this is a simply & reliable method of joining dissimilar meshes. It correctly transfers displacement and loads resulting in an accurate strain and stress condition at the interface. The grid points on glued edges and surfaces do not need to be coincident. Glue creates stiff springs or a weld like connection to prevent relative motion in all directions.
