Felt shaft seal design

Does anyone know were i can get info on felt seal design?specifically design considerations for the shaft eg; does the contact area need to be hardened?what surface finish/roughness is required? any help will be appreciated eg; books, websites, etc

Have a look in the SKF bearing catalogue they have a section on SNH plummer block housings where they discuss the felt seals they fit.

Summary:

Can be used for peripheral speeds up to 4 m/s, for speeds greater than this the seal will form a gap and becomes a non-contact seal.Surface roughness should not exceed 3.2 um. For peripheral speeds in excess of 4 m/s a groung finish is recommended.

To protect your shaft from damage you may consider fitting a ground ring. i.e. a sleeve on which the seal can run. The sleeve can be replaced at a much lesser cost than the shaft.

Thanks guys!i've got hold of the skf book you mentioned.i've took your advice greg and used a ground ring on the shaft which is removable.thanks again.
