I remember reading an article a few years ago where someone had performed an FEA of ANSI B16.5 flanges to code and deduced that some sizes were overly designed whereas others were slightly under (I think). Has anyone else read such an article? If so, do you know where I can get a hold of it?

Have a look at the following API specifications:

Bull 6AF, TR 6AF1, TR 6AF2

They deal with the analysis of API 6B & 6BX integral flanges which are essentially the same as ANSI B16.5 RTJ flanges. They are fairly expensive (around 100 to 130 USD each) but you may be able to find them at the library.

I didn't see any article, but know by personal experience that if you calculate the standard flanges with the methods of ASME VIII Div.1 App.2 you will sometimes fail. prex
