Hi,
I am confused with the failure index results. I understand how the numbers arise - Von Mises/ Tensile strength, for example. Furthermore, When I compute the max VMises/tensile strength of the material on my calculator, the results match. Great!
My confusion is this: VMises/tensile Strength = Factor of safety. If the result is equal to or greater than 1, then the design is assumed 'safe'. Mechanica states that if the Failure Index is equal to or greater than 1, then the material/design has failed.
What is the difference? Is my part safe or not?
In addition, the Failure Index is given as #*E6,for example. What are the units for. safety factor is dimensionless....
