'unable to export' doesn't mean much, do you get an error message of some kind?

NX5.0.6, NX6.0.5, NX7.5.5, NX8.0.0 -> NX8.0.3.4
NX8.5.0.23 -> NX8.5.2.3 & NX9.0.0.19

Do you have license for the STEP and/or IGES translators?

Have you installed the translators? They are located on a separate disk/ download for NX4.

If the following directories are missing, you haven't installed them:

%UGII_BASE_DIR"\IGES
%UGII_BASE_DIR"\STEP

........I know the steps required to carry out the export, but when I attempt a .stp export I get this message:
"Translator image not found. The environment variable STEP203UG_DIR may not be set correctly"

And similar with IGES: "Translator image not found. The environment variable IGES_DIR may not be set correctly"

I can export to Parasolid without problem.

Any thoughts ?

Well, have you looked at what the error message was telling you might be the problem? That is, have you checked to make sure that a) you've actually got your environment variables set and b) that they're set properly? If you used the proper install script to install NX then these variables, as alluded to by IdeasNative, should have been set for you. Of course, even if they are set properly, you'll still need a license to run the translators.

Now as for exporting a Parasolid model, that does NOT require a special translator (or license) nor does it require any environment variables, however, it does not export the same sort of data as does IGES or STEP. Using the Parasolid export function you can only export Solid and Sheet bodies. Everything else will be ignored. And the receiving software has to have the ability to read/open a Parasolid file.
