certainly no expert but related topic -- armor.

my main gripe is the lack of standards for EOD materials -- you don't believe what goes on in the field -- the crime is that the result usually results in death or dismemberment.

anyone with some interesting materials / ideas?

I think that you're basically stuck. The tradeoff is between protection and mobility/visibility.

We're working on ballistic protection for a small turret, which resulted in a 60 pound ceramic armor. A person with his commensurate armor would be weighed down by a couple hundred pounds of stuff, as well as not being able to see the ordnance that he's working on.

The safest thing is to not be in-situ, but robots have their limitations.

Having spent the late 1950's and early to mid-1960's as an active combined CBW (chemical & biological warefare) and EOD (conventional & nuclear) qualified NCO, I can tell you with some certainty that in spite of the obvious dangers in EOD activities, many if not most of the injuries and deaths of EOD personnel are a result of their own carelessness. A cardinal rule (at least then) was to do your own work with explosives and not rely on someone else to do it correctly.......that usually keeps the arms and legs and lives intact.

The EOD school training (then at Indian Head, Maryland Naval Propellent Plant) was long and ardiuous......some eighteen weeks in all to include conventional and nuclear ordnance......with a wash-out of 50%+ of our class. Before you take this on, be sure in your own mind that you can handle the classwork and have the mental set to deal with potentially very deadly materials. On top of this, you will require a high security clearance that the Air Force will put you through.....if there is anything in your background that will prevent the clearance, be up front about it and find something else to do. Whatever you do, don't go into EOD just for the apparent glamour....there isn't a whole lot of that available!

Lastly, if you do get into EOD, you should find civilian jobs that will fit and EOD background, either with Federal and State governments, police departments, or civilian firms dealing with explosives.

Good luck to you with whatever you decide.

Hey bud. Hate to burst your bubble but things have changed in EOD School. Now your looking at 2 weeks in preliminary school at Lackland AFB, TX. Then it's all at Eglin AFB in Florida if you make it through preliminary. After you leave Basic Training you can count on at least 9 months of schooling. I know because I went through school as fast as possible and that's how long it took me. I went through school with close to 80 guys. Me and one other graduated on time. A few others graduated a class or more behind because they "Rolled". A term you'll be familiar with by the time you get out of there. More than half won't make it. My class about 85% didn't. It sounds horrible but I had a blast. School is extremly tough...but more than worth it. Jobs on the outside are limited, but keep in mind so are the people to perform those jobs. You'll do fine as long as your smart, you study, and stay out of trouble. Best of luck from an EOD Tech to you. Hope to see you out there! And by the way...I still got 9 fingers if it makes you feel better. j/k
