How do you calculate the worst case condition of freezing soils against a 32" diameter basin 72" deep. Included in the 32" diameter dimension is a 24" diameter fiberglass basin with 4" of R-7/in. foam insulation. Granular backfill is required all around the basin. The hole is in granit rock. Assume a minimum hole diameter of 60".

What is it that you are trying to calculate? The impact of the freezing on the granular backfill? The relative heat loss of the basin to the granular backfill? or the behavior of the materials to freezing?

You stated that the insulation is 4" in thickness and I am assuming the granular backfill was chosen due to it's resistive propoerties to the effects of freezing. Is the "hole" well drained, or have considerations been made to provide drainage from the ganular backfill?

How warm is the effluent in the basin and how long is it retained?
