In the next few years Europe will enforce ATEX 94/9/CE Directive. This directive will enforce explosion protection in each and every aspect of industry and manufacturing.
To make a long story short, ATEX stamped equipment will be needed in every "potentially explosive atmosphere". Conversion costs for an existing plant will be very high, because everything, from electric cables to sensors to machinery, will have to be adapted to the new directive.
There is a twist on this.
If you have a manufacturing machine with, let's say, ten expensive machines, and you have an explosive atmosphere too in the same area, you should buy new machines. You should. You can choose a different way: you can eliminate the explosive atmosphere (there are several approved way: forced ventilation, aeration, seals) or at least reduce it in such a way that the machines are now OUT of the potentially explosive atmosphere. There will be no need to replace machinery at the cost of some security measures.
Hope this helps, I know Michelin saved a lot of money this way.
