Hi guys,
I have a reinforced concrete circular column with 2 sections. One section is 1.95m diametre and the other is 1.65m. I apply 1,000kN axial load at the head of the column. When I check the column for Eurocode 2, 97 N20 bars in the 1.95m diametre section is not enough reinforcement (error o/s #14). However, if I add one more bar (98 N20 bars) the section has plenty of capacity (ratio is 0.027). It is very weird.
Why does 1 bar make such a big difference? 97 N20 bars is 30,655mm2 of steel that is 1% of the concrete area of the 1.95m de diametre section (2,984,962mm2). Eurocode requires minimum 0.2% of steel.
Cheers
