I've looked and looked but am struggling to find any recommendations for the tempering of a 420 weld metal deposited using a MIG/MAG process. Can anyone help?

Yes. Go to the web site below and register (for free)

They have a technical sheet on 420 stainless steel, including welding. The ER420 stainless steel should be post weld heat treated between 1350 to 1400 deg F for 6 to 8 hours.

Just as a follow-up, I checked ASM Handbook, Volume 6, and for 420 stainless filler metal w/ER420 stainless filler metal, the recommended PWHT temperature range is 1250 deg F to 1400 deg F, which confirms the information in the CarTec literature. The recommended minimum preheat is 400 deg F.

Wow! Thanks metengr. Are you tied into your chair? I guessed you might be the one that replied, but not so quickly. And twice! Thanks again!!
