The codes don't dictate how you turn "it" (fuel gas or electricity) off. In the US, International Fire Code Section 904.11.2 dictates that fuel gas and electricity be shutoff upon activation of the automatic fire extinguishing system. The further dictate that whatever mechanism used to shut "it" off that it be manually reset.
While it is not mentioned in the IFC, NFPA 17A does not require this for solid fueled burning operations such as barbeque pits or smokers (thank goodness).
