Equipment Feeder from Adjacent Building

I have a project with two laboratory buildings, side-by-side, with connecting hallways between the two buildings. One building was built a year later than the other in the 80s and over their life span the electrical system has been added onto so that now some of the equipment in one building is fed from the distribution system of the adjacent building. We are renovating the mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems for both buildings and we intend to refeed this equipment from their local distribution system but we have run into problem with one piece of equipment that will be very costly to refeed.

Does the NEC not allow a piece of equipment in one building to be fed from an adjacent building? If so, are there any exceptions to the rule? This is a university lab building, so they have special maintenance staff familiar with the building on hand.

As always, thanks so much for any input you may have on the subject.

You can always put in a small locsl panel with its own ground connection and treat it as a remote pan from the other builing. Akin to putting a sub panel for the workshop from the house but it is a separate building and different grounding system.
