Greetings to all,

I am working on a project that utilizes a 20.330 dia x 2" thick x 80" long drum. The drum is ASTM A106 seamless. I am removing material from the drum for access holes. I need to make 5"x3"x2" thick pods to replace the material removed from the original drum. Some of the considerations for the Pod material are as follows:

Supply shoud not be an issue
Same or improved performance over the A106
Ease of machining
Hardness 55-60 Rc.

I am looking for a material that will be easy to obtain and not difficult to machine. Originally we were using A2 tool steel. A2 is hard to machine and the cost is not economically attractive. I need to look into another option for the access pods. Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Jay

jbknudsen,
I do not understand about your design "pod". What is it? Please advise me. Do you mean reinforcing pad?
