It has been far too long since my college days, and I have a new design issue that perhaps is an easy one.

I am analyzing feasbility of placing new lighting fixtures on existing poles. The new fixtures will have a larger effective projected area, of 12.2 (including the brackets).

These will be mounted about 22 feet up, on a 8" tapered steel pole (which has been reduced from its original 30 feet).

This is in Hawaii, wind design is 80MPH plus 1.3 gust factor.

Is it feasible to convert the EPA and windspeed into a lateral force? If so, how.

I guess the next step would be calculation of an overturning moment, and pullout force on existing anchor bolts.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

PS

PacificSteve,

My best advice is to get yourself a qualified and experienced structural engineer, and give up trying to do it yourself.

Yes, what you ask can be done with ease by the right person, but it is only part of what is needed. eg What do you know of the foundation and the pole capacity?
