At our process plant, we are often given the task of recommending protective coatings for various applications for various jobs.The choice is often between
i) Fusion Bonded Epoxy;
ii) Powdered Coating through Fluidized Bed ;
iii)Electro-plating etc.

From the environmental point of view, which coating
process is more environmental friendly? Any input and
suggestion will be highly appreciated.

Will appreciate input from colleagues.

The real answer may be "it depends";

(a) Are you painting small objects that can be prepped and painted in a shop, or a pipe-line in an existing plant.
(b) What are your environmetal concerns?
(c) How is the "paint shop" set up?
(d) Are you accounting for waste associated with surface preparation, and the frequency of repainting?

- You can use very high VOC containing coatings, but rely on ventilation capture to reduce VOCs into the environment to zero (they often use this approach for aircraft where very thin coats are desired).
- You can use a process and coating with a relatively high "envireonmental impact", but if it reduces the frequency of repainting four-fold, the net impact on the environment may be less.




 
I see this have having three components.
1. impact of manufacturing the coating feedstock
2. impact of surface prep required
3. impact of applying the coating in your shop.

I presume that i and ii on you list are solventless systems with good dust containment. Then the impact at your facility comes down to energy consumption and surface prep.
You need to break these down. My hunch is that factors 1 and 2 are the biggest.

Dear Mushimko,

Please find answer to the questions raised:

a) The jobs consist of varied size. From coating a pumps impellor to coating of a 10 meter storage tank.
b) Environment concerns are of general nature.
c) The paint shop has a modest nature with a small fludized bed that can handle job not more than a meter dia parts.
d) Yes we are counting for waste associated with surface preparation and frequency of repainting.
