Hello Everyone,
I am modeling foundation to study the effect of embedment depth in the soil. The loads are pure horizontal, vertical, and moment. In addition to combine of them and they are applied as displacement control.
First of all, I validated my model with the literature but was for surface foundation and it gave reasonable results. The contact was on the bottom of the foundation only.
However, when I embedded the foundation into soil and trying to get the pure horizontal load capacity by applying horizontal displacement, the model is not converging. In this case, the interactions were on the sides and the bottom. The model only converge when I remove side interaction, and the results in this case were unrealistic. I try to run the model with pure vertical load, and it is converging in this case.
The model in horizontal load only converge when I apply a small vertical load is added in a previous step to it. Although, in the surface case, I managed to apply horizontal load only without vertical force applied.
So, why this could happen even I use the same model which I got easily the horizontal capacity in case of surface footing?
