Elliptical helix?

Is there any way to create helix from ellipce (or other shape), not from circle?

Kind of.

I made a barrel-shapes spring once. I used a helix to create an auger-shaped surface and intersected that with a conical surface. The resulting intersection curve was a spiral winding along the conical surface.

I have that model somewhere. I will have to wait until after-hours to find and post it.

I could be the world's greatest underachiever, if I could just learn to apply myself.
