Ellipsolidal head calculations of years gone by

Interesting issue is that while performing calculations on an ellipsoidal head on a vessel fabricated in 1947 using todays formulas it won't work according to ASME section VIII.

Is the formula used in 1947 different that that used today? I noted that the MAWP is based on a percentage of burst strength,

You should use the ASME code for the year of fabrication which can be either 1947,1946, 1945, etc...You should not use today's code for calculation checks. Their will be a cost to purchase that code, however, before you purchase the code, get a copy, at an additional nominal cost, of the manufacturer's data sheet from the National Board. The manufacturer's data sheet will have information to assist you in your quest.
