I have a elevated hemispherical tank that I'm doing a seismic analysis. My question is how much does the geometry of the tank effect the convective and impulsive components of the base shear. I found the equations for the convective and impulsive components but they are for a cylindrical ground supported tank. I can't find any information on hemispherical elevated tanks. I have read the chapters in ASCE 7-10 on elevated storage tanks and also AWWA D100-05.

Thanks

I doubt you're going to find anything. Use a shape that there's formulas for and note that as an assumption.

There's an article that discusses this topic in the current issue of Structure magazine.
The on-line post also has references.

Curiously, this is an area that needs a lot more research.
