Effects of a non-functional bearing

If the useful life of a bearing(say 25 years ??) is exceeded and the bearing (elastomeric bearing or a pot bearing)is not replaced,what will be the effect on the bridge ?Can you please describe the progressive effect on the bridge i.e.as the time goes by.

The life of a bridge structure is on the order of 50 -75 years and within more temperate climates closer to the 75 limit. Now, for reality...by the time planning and funding are in place for the replacement 100 yrs is quite normal, so the bearings and the remaining structural elements are quite often used well beyond what they were designed for.

I am not aware of any problems with newer bearings (neoprene, PTFE, or POT bearings) that have exceeded normal service life. However, I am aware of plenty of old "rocker" bearings that are left frozen due to debris collecting such as to prevent the proper rotations.

as to the effect, the movement will be accomondated but it is likely that the movement will be transferred to the substructure. In some cases this can be detected as the columns will be out of plumb or cracked if the substructure is significantly aged.
