What is the effect of solids in pumping liquid.i.e effect on impeller selection, wear rings and seal flushing plan selection.

Hello everybody:

In PUMP HANDBOOK, third edition by Igor J. Karassik et al, see the Section 9.16 "Solids Pumping" from page 9.321 through 9.376. There you can find, among others, Solids effect on centrifugal pumps, Wear mechanisms and materials, Construction of solids-handling pumps.

I hope this can be of some help to you.

If you intend to pump solids, find a company that builds pumps to pump solids for their day job. They do things differently with pumps designed to pumps solids than normal pump companies do for pumps to pump clear fluids. Google Nagle Pumps and see if you can track them to who they are sold or manufactured by today. There are others that do the same thing. Google "ash pumps" or "bottom ash pumps" and see if that brings up anything you can use.

And if this question has anything to do with your other thread about pump speed, pumps that pump solids don't want to turn fast.

PS: does the thread about he viscosity correction have anything to do with this? If so, are we talking slurries?

AKSV24,

Depends:
If you are talking about a very litle amount with no continue pumping fluid with solids. Very litle will be less than 2 or 3% by weight, less that GE 1.02. In this case , the effect is mainly mechanically on pump. You will go with low rpm, and try to use harder materials on wear wetted components.

The other case is hydrotransport, in the case you should pumping
a large amount of solids, means 3 to 60-70% of solids by weight.
In this case , the effect is mechanically, hydraulic on pump and system. If it is the case, it better that you provide all fluid data to better understanding your question.

I hope this helps.
