How does decreasing the number of vanes on an impellor affect the pumps capacity? The vane profile is not changed.

Actually pump capacity is not much effected. But it does effect the head and flowrate relationship. Increasing no. vanes flattens up the pump curve.

My knowledge relates to fans but pumps and fans are similar in this regard.

The number of vanes affects the "slip". That is the actual discharge angle vs. the theoretical discharge angle. This in turn affects the head. The fewer vanes the more slip, the less head.

There is an optimum number of vanes beyond which the friction losses offset any gains.
