I'm considering working with a client installing an avionics box in the panel of his EC130B4 machine. We hope to do it initially under a Field Approval/337 and later an STC.
I need IPC or SRM details of the panel structure and local stock materials as well. Can this astute group of engineers help??? Thanks, JQC

Hi JQCF1.

I can only strongly recommend to contact manufacturer's customer support.
Supplementary Avionic installation are very often rated as only valid under STC. Refer to FSIMS Volume 4, 4-1180, figure 4-68 for list of major alteration jobs.
This will also help you to fulfill Field Approval Process as the manufacturer will be informed about your intended alteration.

Cheers.

Hi Helohydraulic,
Many thanks for your comment but I need help on your doc suggestion. Where can I locate FSIMS Volume 4, 4-1180, figure 4-68 for a list of major alteration jobs? Would the helo operator have this doc in his library?

Since my earlier post, I went to Eurocopter-America website and found a great deal of helpfull specs & pics etc. The avionics installer on the other side of the US will develop hardware details and I'll do the DER approval to support the 337 from his details, sketches and pics. Then we go to the local FSDO.
I'm interested in your user name. Are you active in helo hydraulics...I have another job with a hydraulic system on a Robinson R44 machine.

Hi JQCF1.

FSIMS is FAA flight standard information management system.
There you can find FAA order 8900.1 dealing with change process. I do not know if the operator has this doc available...

For my referenced doc, see here:
Browse to volume 4, chapter 9, section 1 "Perform Field Approval of Major Repairs and Major Alterations", subpara 4-1180, there is list figure 4-68.
To cite the explanation: "...The following lists indicate which method(s) may be used for approving major alterations to TC’d and STC’d products..."

Direct contact of American-Eurocopter customer support should solve your documentation problem concerning IPC and also informs by the way the manufacturer about what's going on with his rotorcraft :).

Yes, I do hydraulic R&D in helicopter business. Unfortunately, I have until now no experience with Robinson. But I'm interested in your job, so if you don't mind...:).

HeloHydraulic,

Thanks for the lead to the FSIMS. I try to avoid it and still use 8300.10 in hard copy as a start.

The 4-68 listing is good for another project I have. By absence of an alteration in that list, defines it as a "minor" mod. At least that is my interpretation.

I cannot describe the Robinson project on this open forum.

Regards, John C.

Hi John (JQCF1).

Be carefully with this interpretation of "everything is minor which is not on the list" :)...the FAA has a different view of these things.

For Gregor,

Thanks for your comments on the never ending question of Minor vs major. Its all up to the ASI in most cases.

WE still plan for a field approval and then STC... wish me luck.

Thanks, JQCF1
