Normally, stainless steel type 304 is selected as earth lug material. This is general practice to weld 304 SS with carbon steel support of the equipment. I would like to know the reason to use 304 SS which is dissimilar material to the support. Please comment about the advantage to use 304 SS instead of carbon steel.

Note : I also see earth lug which is galvanized steel in some projects. I will appreciate if someone can advise me the reason to choose earth lug material.

Simply because you don't need to paint it: if it is painted you would be obliged to scrape it off in order to be sure of the electrical contact.

SS 304 lugs are maintenance free and last for a life time. Hence they are used instead of galvanized steel parts. This would need periodic maintenance. However, in our country India, the latter is popular and 304 virtually nonexistent due to cost factor and not so stringent inspection.
