Does anyone know a quick calculation for the compressor power needed to generate 4 CFM of 4500 psig air (that is, a compressor outlet flow of 4 CFM)? Compressor inlet would be standard atmospheric (14.7 psia, 60F, 0%RH). I don't need anything too exact, just a good ballpark number.

look into your thermodynamics or engineering reference manual. the calc is straightforward. all you need is mass flow times generated head times the conversion factors divided by an assumed efficiency.
the problem may further be complicated as the air temperature will exceed material limitations. there will definitely need to be cooling of the air at various stages. w/out having a calculator handy, my swag is about 4-5 stages of compression with intercooling and pressure reduction at each stage.
good luck!

pmover/quark,

Thanks for your help. I really like that calculator, quark!
