Documentation of receipt of ASME materials 6

A manufactuer of pressure vessels normally purchases ASME materials from outside vendors.
Are there specific ASME requirements that are to be followed when these materials are received, such as measuring pipe thickness, plate thickness, markings, etc.?
If so, where are these requirements states?

The inspection methods & practices will be outlined in the fabricators ASME manual and may vary between fabricator's. Basically, the onus is on the fabricator to ensure Code requirements are met and how that is accomplished is up to them, of course with the concurrence of their respective AI. Keep in mind that the fabricator's manual will have been reviewed and blessed during the joint review.

For ordering plate refer to ASME SA-20 "Specification for General Requirements for Steel Plates for Pressure Vessels"

The order requirements stated on the PO must be in accordance with ASME SA-20 for plate material. The requirements listed in the PO dictate the receipt inspection to assure conformance with SA-20.

For ordering pipe, refer to ASME SA-530

For ordering tubing, refer to ASME SA-450

I don't have a copy of ASTM A-20 at hand, but don't recall that A-20 had anything specific about receipt inspection on the part of the material purchaser. Perhaps I am remembering it incorrectly or maybe I am a revision behind the times. Does it actually call for any receipt inspection? My observation is that very few vessel manufacturers have thickness measurements as part of the ASME QC manual. Most rely upon the marking requirements of A-20 to identify material, thickness, schedulke, class, etc.

We have an R-Certificate and as part of the requirements for ordering material for use in boilers and pressure vessels we follow ASME SA-20 for ordering pressure vessel plate material.

Ordering and Receipt inspection of code materials is something that you describe in your Quality manual. If you read SA-20, one of the ordering requirements is dimensions that must be stated on the PO. When material comes in, dimensions may not necessarily be marked on the item. As such, before you accept the plate, you had better check the thickness to assure it conforms to the requirements stated on your PO.

SA-20 is a good place to start. The manufactuer is responsible for everything there.

The material has to be specified, ordered, received to its specification. Example: SA-516 Gr70 "plate mat"
specification happen to ask for specific requirements that mfg has to conform to the specification and to SA-20
(Steve Browne: SA-20 is the same as ASTM A-20)so you will find it in Sec II-A of the ASME Code.
Receiving: thickness meassurements are part of receiving and must be in every Mfr QC Manual or it is not a Manual at all. I do not think that any team Leader will miss out on that requirement.
